openme.exe cannot be found at start up 1

When I start up Windows 98, there is a message that pops up and says that "Openme.exe" cannot be found.

Have you downloaded and installed fastdownloader? If yes check your system.ini file. Under[Boot]if you see Shell=explorer.exe openme.exe thats your problem. Remove the openme.exe part and save, exit and reboot.

Here's complete instructions for removing openme.exe that i've posted here before.

Openme.exe is an XXX dialer which can create a very big phone bill. You can remove it using Ad-aware which is free or do it manually.

Here's manual directions. Just do what you haven't already done. #4 will get rid of the startup error.

1. Go into add/remove programs in the control panel and look for something called WebDialer and uninstall it if it's there. It may or may not be there.

2. Press ctrl + alt + del and 'end task' on openme.exe. Also see if there's something there that looks like 5-2-46-112.exe. If so end task on that too. The numbers may be slightly different but will be similiar if there.

3. Then click start--find--files--and search for openme.exe. When found delete it. Then search for the other file I mentioned if it was listed when you did a ctrl + alt + del and delete that too.

4. Click start--run--type system.ini or sysedit and click ok. In system.ini look for this line near the top:

shell=Explorer.exe openme.exe

Delete ONLY the openme.exe part so that it just says shell=Explorer.exe with nothing typed to the right of it. (Be careful deleting so that you don't start deleting the system.drv line underneath.) Then close system.ini and click yes when prompted to save changes. Then restart the computer. After restarting go into the Temp folder at c:\windows\temp and delete everything in it. The dialer may have placed some files in there.

I have a question about openme as well. Somehow, on my machine, openme received a virus and is being held in quarantine. Would it do any harm to the machine if I were to delete it? Seeing as how it is a porn dialer I doubt it, but it wouldn't hurt to be careful. Thanks in advance.

I am getting that "Openme.exe" cannot be found error message. However I do not see shell=Explorer.exe openme.exe in my system.ini or my sysedit. Would it be located in a different spot since I am running Windows XP?

LayneS, obviously delete it.

ButterflyDiva, since you have XP you'll need to do this. Click start--run--type regedit and click ok. Doubleclick on each of these:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Open the Winlogon key. In the right pane you'll see a value that looks something like this:

"Explorer.exe openme.exe"

Right click on that value, select Modify, and delete ONLY the openme.exe part. Leave the Explorer.exe part there. Then click ok, close regedit and restart.

I did a scan and found openme.exe as a trojan virus. So, natually I deleted it cause it was 'noncleanable'. Now, Every time I start up my computer, it says that it cannot locate openme.exe. My computer takes too long to run because it is *still* looking for that program. I've tried all those ways mentioned above and still, that message keeps popping up. I have Windows XP. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but along with the torjan, I had two different worms on my computer. over 3,000 files were infected and all of them deleted. Please help me!

HermioneORourke, go to this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Open the Winlogon key then doubleclick on each value shown in the right pane. You should see one that shows "Explorer.exe openme.exe". Remove the openme.exe part from that one but leave the explorer.exe part there.

what if i "happened" to delete
the whole "piece" of the registry
(not the "winlogon" folder), just the
"shell" entry that had the "Explorer.exe opebnme.exe"
thing as the string??? any way to "restore" it???

I did that, there was no 'Explorer.exe openme.exe' In fact, there was no 'Explorer.exe'. But I got rid of openme.exe. I found, on another board list, a program called 'ad-aware' and it got rid of it. I don't remember the URL for the program, but I'm sure if you enter it in a search engine you'll find it. Works great. Thanks for all you're help guys! I'm glad I wasn't the only person confused about this whole thing.

To tidy this up, the openme.exe dialer is recognized as a trojan by Norton/Symantec, who give removal instructions including the registry edits for Win XP and NT/2000 users, other Windows users don't need to edit the registry.

Thank you all soo much... my computer was going nuts and it was giving me this openme.exe message and i searched in google and found this and it saved my computer... i am running winxp and i did what Kento said and now it works just like new again... thank you all so much... dont know what i would have done without you... thanks again.

jennifer, did you find openme.exe and did you read this thread as to how it's removed? Or you could just download and run Ad-aware. It'll remove it.

I had the same fastdownloader problem, and it seemed to cause many more problems, when i startup i get a series of exactly 6 blue screens (the ones we all know, which i avoid by pressing any key. This is kind of anoying and it really buggs me to have to wait for the screens to appear and go. What can I fo
