After migrating to Excel XP from Excel 97. I'm getting the following errors when opening my workbooks.

As soon as I open a message dialog box says:

"Error occurred while loading "SheetXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX". Do you want to continue loading project?"

In the Excel XP error log it says:
Lost Visual Basic Project
Lost ActiveX Controls.

The workbooks I am opening are just some simple ones i.e. no macros or VBA attached and just contain simple formulas. They worked ok in Excel 97, but after the upgrade kept getting the above messages. I've tried various things such as uninstall/reinstall, checking from other machines etc.. Could this be some kind of virus?

Oh, if I repair them they are fine. But more interested if there is any solution for this rather than repairing X amount of spreadsheets.

They may be simple, but here's what occurs.

Generally, the sheet name is actually Sheet1111111111111111111 or something. Sometimes Sheet211111111111111, you get the idea.

Want to see where that sheet name is coming from?
Open the file and hit Alt+F11.
Look at the sheetnames at the left under "Project Workbookname"

Why does this occur?
Because the sheet has been copied many, many times.

The best thing to do is make one "template" worksheet and copy IT as many times as you want. But if you copy one, then copy the new one, then copy the newest one, and so on, you'll end up with the issue you have. Older versions of Office (like 2000) may not even be able to open the file, but XP does.

If it's just simple formulas, here's the simple fix:

Save the file down to an Excel 5.0 version. Close it, reopen it and save is as the current version. Weirdo sheet names all gone.

Dreamboat: Thanks for the info. However, having viewed the sheetnames there a none that are related to SheetXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

In some cases we have opened a workbook that only contains 2 sheets, no formulas and we still get this error. Mind you after we let Excel XP repair them they are fine. But am very interested to find out the cause of this. I tried opening the files on Office 2000 it also produces the same errors.

If this sheet "SheetXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" is not there. Do you know why I would still get this? This is really bugging me. I know I can repair them, but I would like to know why this happens and if it can be fixed?

Do they really say SheetXXXX...? Or is it as I've described above? Generally a "regular" sheet number with a bunch of ones behind it.

There doesn't have to be ANY formulas in the file for it to occur. I've already told you why it occurs, and how to keep it from occurring. It's very common too when files are several years old.

You opened the VB Editor by hitting Alt+F11 and you are telling me that there are no sheet names like I described?

Did you open the VB Editor? Did you see the sheetnames at the left? You may need to double-click some of those folders to see them. You should see:

Project(YourWorkbookName)
Sheet1
Sheet2
Sheet3
ThisWorkbook

But in these files, they are probably something like:

Project(YourWorkbookName)
Sheet1
Sheet2
Sheet1111111111
Sheet21111111111111
Sheet211111111111111
Sheet2111111111111111
ThisWorkbook

Or whatever.

You're welcome to email one of them to me, but I can't help if the file's already been repaired.

Yes, in XP they do not show the name as SheetXXXXXXXXXXXX (don't know why). However, I opened them up in 97 and I can see the names as SheetXXXXXXXXXXXXX that match the error message when opening them in Excel XP. Sorry, did not get to visit your site yet.

On a last note, since this does not happen in Excel 97 do you know why this occues in Excel XP. I even tried, first, searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base but they did not even have any record of this? Does it have some blip in note being able to read files such as copies that are named SheetXXXXXXXXXXXXX.....

Many thanks for your help, it has definately given me a better picutre in what has happened.

Thanks!!!!!!

Many thanks for your help. With the info you gave me I can now explain to my people why this is happening. I guess my only current option is to get our users to repair them when opening them in OXP.

Thanks
