Opening *.wk1 files from a network drive

Hi guys,

I'm sure this is a known issue but I've googled and knowledgebased (Lotus, Novell and MS) and come up with nothing.

Loadsa Lotus 123 files (*.wk1) on Netware shared drives. Trying to open them with either Excel 97 or 2000 gives:

" "filename.wk1" canot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access and read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding."

If I copy the document (it doesn't matter which one) to a user's desktop it will open fine. I can copy the document back to the network drive and it still won't open. If I open the document from the desktop and save it back to network drive AS AN EXCEL FILE the user can then open the document from the network drive. If I save it back as a 123 file the file will not open.

It's not a rights issue as the problem affects me and I've got full admin rights (besides, if it was a rights issue the user wouldn't be able to save/work with the excel version of the file). I've tried different Novell clients (4.11 and 4.83), different OSs (NT4.0 and W2K) and different versions of office (97 and 2000).

I am totally stuck and need some assistance.

Pleeze help!

TIA

You could try:
1:Make a copy of one of the files
2:change the copy's extension to .wk4
3:Try oopening that from the network

If that works, do the same for all the files Rgds

xlbo,

thanks for the suggestion - no joy I'm afraid. I tried copying a file to an NT server and was able to open it without a problem. I've tried renaming the file on the Novell server to *.xls but the problem persists - it happens on all our Novell servers so its not an individual server issue.

Any more ideas welcome!

In case anyone's interested I've found the fix. It's a known issue with version 4.83 of the novell client and there are a couple of patche out to solve the problem.
