I am working with someone on a newsletter.

She has a Mac and Quark 6.5.

I have a PC and Quark 7.0.

We need to be able to email eachother our work. But we are not able to open the respective files once they are emailed.

What could be the problem?
What can we do?

Hi chaya770
I think you might have to have the same version of Quark on each machine to be able open Quark documents from one platform to the other.
Have you tried using Quark 6.5 on the PC?
Or maybe the Mac user can download the fully functional Quark 7 demo which will run for a month and allow you to use all features.
Hope this helps

1) Make sure both of you are fully patched.

2) The user of version 7 will need to export a version 6 file to share.

3) All files transferred by email should be packed in a zip archive before transfer

4) All files created on the Mac should have filename extensions (such as .QXP for the QuarkXPress project file) so that Windows knows what to do with the file.

To jimoblak:

1) What does it mean to by fully patched?

How do we get fully patched?

2) How do I export a version 6 file?

Thanks!

Go to Quark.com and see it there are any updates or patches available for QuarkXPress. The current patch numbers for your versions are 6.52 and 7.01

The 30-day trial software is not intended for production work according to the license and common sense indicates that there is little point in working on a project that your partner cannot open in 30 days. You should be fine by exporting a version 6 file.

The point of downloading and trying the 30 day fully functional demo of Quark 7.1 is to determine if that solves the compatibility problem between the two machines. If it does then the Mac user might want to consider buying the upgrade to Quark 7.1. If it does not solve the problem then no money is spent for nothing and the demo will expire in 30 days.

One other thing is encoding email attachement. Make sure that, on the mac, you encode "for all computers" via your email app's preferences. Don't know about encoding on pcs, but MIME can cause problems on macs.

Compatibility is solved by patching. It is free, a much smaller download, and falls nicely within the EULA. There are reports on the Quark forum that version 7 may mess with preferences in 6 in some cases so trouble may be saved by simply patching. If one upgrades to version 7, their version 6 is deactivated. This may cause other workflow issues with the version 6 user if they work with someone using version 5 or 6.

I'm always a fan of using a demo but this may introduce more trouble than it solves. And I have yet to meet one person who is elated about version 7.

The PC guy with Quark 7.1 might be able to save down to six and send to the Mac lady who has version 6, which actually should be 6.52 which is free to upgrade to.
However when the Mac lady sends the file back to the PC user who has 7.1 as a version 6 document I doubt he will be able to open it unless he uses his version 6.
So the bottom line is I think that both users should be using the exact same version of Quark for maximum compatibility.
Maybe chaya770, will stop by and tell us what the final solution was when he gets it straightened out.

What logic is this? Of course you can open a document created in a previous version of a design app. If you could not, then there would be no reason for anyone to purchase upgrades. [bigsmile]
