One of our clients has a Windows 2003 Server with mainly Win XP clients. They've just been experiencing for the last week or so, very slow opening of Word & Excel files from the server.
We've discovered from other forums (not Tek-Tips)it is probably to do with opportunistic locking. See: MS solution:
I have carried out the registry changes to the server and on two of the workstations to disable this, but the workstations are still slow to open files.
If a file is opened directly through the application i.e. Word or Excel then navigate to the file, it opens quickly. If accessed direct on the mapped drive on the server it's very very slow to open. Problem only applies to Word & Excel, pdfs for example are fine.
I've ran full malware scans and suchlike.
It does seem to be a bit intermittent.
Any ideas welcomed.
