opening mail in Netscape 4.72 1

Hello all,
I'm having trouble opening certain types of mail with Netscape. Whenever I try to open an attachment with an.eml extension on it I get a security warning instead of opening it. Sometimes I also get a blank page when I recieve mail from people even though it tells me something is there. Would a reinstall of Netscape take care of this or is there a setting or two I need to check?

This sounds like two different issues.

Netscape uses it's own file assoications instead of what Windows uses. Check to see what program EML files are assoicated with. EDIT - PREFERENCES - NAVIGATOR - APPLICATIONS. You should have an entry for Microsoft Outlook Express Mail Messages and EML should be listed as the program. If the association is correct what exactly does the security warning message say? And is it coming from Netscape or another program?

The issue with blank messages is a known issue with folks who use Outlook and send messages in RTF format that is received in Netscape. I find the message is more pervalent when the IMAP protocol is used. If you are using this protocol you can drag the message from the IMAP inbox to your Local Inbox and that sometimes clears up the error. If you are using POP (or if the first suggestion does not work) you can see the messsage by clicking on VIEW - PAGE SOURCE and you should be able to see the message text (in it's raw form).

Microsoft Outlook Express email is not listed in the list of applications. Can I add it without too much trouble? Could that be why I can't open it? Thanks for the suggestions.

You can certainly try adding it in and see what happens. If EML is associated with another program already it will tell you.

In the same location where you searched if the application was present click on NEW TYPE. For the file type enter .EML and as soon as you go to another field if the association exists on another application it will tell you. If you continue enter the path to the executable file which should be something like C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe

Thanks joegz, adding the .eml extension to the apps list seems to have cleared up the problem.
