Problem: Older versions of Word and Microsoft office do not want to open the newest DocX file format used in the 2007 version.
Problem: The file convert update supplied by Microsoft for older versions of Office does not work in a lot of computers (for DocX at least)

Solution: A well written, small stand-alone file converter (DocX2RTF.exe)is available for free from Native Winds Software

This can also be done using the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack which retrofits earlier versions of office to be able to read and write new versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.

I use it on Office 2002 and it works fine.

If you are deploying office 2007 you can also set automatic back saving of work though goup policies.

Office Compatibility Pack (file converters) did not work for me on many machines (and Google told me of other having the problem), so I was glad to find the free standalone conversion utility.
