We're running Exchange server 5.5 sp4 and Outlook 2002 sp1. One of our vp's is complaining about his attachments because even though he unchecked the "Always ask before opening this type of file" box, every time he gets an attachment with the same extension, it still prompts him to choose between opening and saving the file. Is there a registry edit I can do to stop that prompt from appearing for him?
Thanks in advance.

**Note: This problem should only affect Windows 2000 or XP machines.

Issue: When opening an attachment in Outlook the user is displayed the Opening Mail Attachment dialog box. When the user unchecks the “Always ask before opening this type of attachment” checkbox the attachment opens correctly, however the next time a file with the same type is opened the dialog box reappears and the checkbox is again checked.

Reason: This problem is caused because the user does not have administrator rights to change the properties of the file extension. Users with administrator rights do not experience this problem.

Solution: To solve the problem you must first log onto the computer as administrator. Next open the Folder Options menu in the Control Panel and select the File Types tab at the top. Select the file extension you would like opened by Outlook and click Advanced. Uncheck the “Confirm open after download” checkbox. The file type will now open without the dialog box.

**Note: There is no way to reverse this within Outlook. The “Confirm open after download” checkbox must be rechecked to show the dialog box again. This must be done on all Windows operating systems to show the dialog box again.
