I recently purchased a new laptop which has Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium.

There was a period in the beginning which I had to register with Word and Excel, which I let lapse.

It was suggested to me that I download Open Office, which I have done. Can I get Word and Excel from Open Office?

If so, how do I do it?

Is this OpenOffice.org from Sun you are talking about?

If so try your luck here.

I don't use it myself but it says it can read and write files to and from the mentioned MS Office programs but it will not have the Microsoft version of Word or Excel, so it probably just has its' own version of the programs?

Not quite... since Word and Excel are MS products...

Now for the good news, OpenOffice does have a spreadsheet and wordprocessor apps that are similar to Word and Excel, and can read their files, as Linney pointed out, and above all it is FREE...

You should be able to open the documents, and also 'save as' Microsoft Word documents. I have open office at home - but I am sure it just opens Word docs normally... Or should be able just to do an 'Open With...' by right clicking the docs.

I can't test now as I don't have it here, but I will try later and let you know... and how...

The applications are called Write and Calc i think?

Yes, the OpenOffice version of Excel is called calc. And Write is the OO version of Word.

We get new computers with OO. Open office not generally well like here. We've seen problems opening Excel spreadsheets. And the users generally don't have the time to figure out why something won't open, so they get permission to have Excel installed.

Yes, OpenOffice may be free, but it doesn't always mean better.
