Hi,
I have a directory filled with files that have no file extensions that I have copied over from linux. Every time I want to open one the application dialog box opens and I have to manually choose Wordpad. Without file extensions I don't even have the option to make it sticky. They are merely text files that can be opened in Wordpad. Can I set Wordpad to be the default application for that directory or do I have to attach file extensions to all the files (100's)? If so, is there a batch command that will accomplish this?
tia,

Hi

You can use the batch command to rename all files to get a .txt extension from the command prompt thus:

ren *. *.txt

Application associations are based upon a file extension, and to the best of my knowledge it is not possible to override them on a per folder basis.

Thanks JR, now .... manouvering in dos....is there a way to autocomplete commands? For instance just getting to \Programs Files\core app\subdir1\subdir2 requires a lot of typing. I know in linux hitting the tab will autocomplete or give a list of possibles; kind of like when IE autocompletes a url. Can that be done in win2k dos?
It's been quite a while since I was fluent in dos!

thanks again for batch command (I vaguely remember using it from before '95)

regards,
Bill W.

Yes, you can enable a file and folder name autocomplete on Win2k. If you have TweakUI installed, go to Control Panel -> TweakUI and the Cmd tab you can choose a key for filename and directory (folder) completion.
If you don't have tweak UI installed, you can get it from here:

It can be altered by changing some registry settings, but it is easier to use this control panel.
