as of now, i have setup my first server using apache. then i realized that what many websites use for their "online shopping cart" technology is asp, or some other language.

my question is simply this:
does anyone have any advice on a substitute of asp for use on my webpage?

any help will be appreciated

I prefer php over asp but you can get a module for apache called apache::asp. You can do a google for it but you will need to install mod_perl also before apache::asp will work. If you go the php route, you can find a lot of php scripts here: Most are open source. This link will take you to their shopping cart scripts:

thank you very much. i will have to check them out.

oh and i DID see the apache::asp download, but the apache website seemed to imply that the download was retired and therefore, not compatible with the latest version of apache (which i have)

as for asp: I'm trying to drift away from depending on Microsoft.
i have a feeling that sooner or later a metaphorical bomb will go off in the engine room of Microsoft's pioneering "ship of wonder

One must always keep in mind that ASP is not a language, but rather an object definition. Although in the Win32 world "ASP" and "a VBScript implementation of ASP" are synonymous, the same is not true universally. Apache:ASP, for example, is implemented in perl, so many "ASP" carts will not run in that environment.

I you absolutely, positively have to have VBScript/ASP under Apache, Sun makes the implementation available in their product, Sun Java System Active Server Pages 4.0. This is, however, a for-pay product.

I, like RythmAce find PHP to be superior in nearly all ways to VBScript/ASP.
