I am considering eventually abandoning Microsoft office. I am wondering if they way to do this is to install open office and use both for a while.

Therefore I'm looking for advice on the wisdom of doing this and are there any issues I need to be aware of? In particular file associations and potential conflicts?

Any & all comments appreciated.

I'm doing the same thing... and am running OO and Office97 together on both my laptop and desktop and no glitches. I had a few problems when I first started... was me, and not either program. As I need new templates, I simply use the Word one and then save it as an OO file.

i've run Oo_Org next to many ms products including office and i don't think there is anything that would cause an issue. you may want to watch which program windows will default to for various extensions-- but that's not really a problem as much as something you deal with any time you have two apps that can handle the same type of file.

I haven't seen any issues- this is a great way to transition. It is have MS Office to fall back on, if needed.
("Needed" may mean that you don't know how to do something in OOo yet.)

I have to say, so far so good. I have had OOo hang a couple of times and it seems even worse the office at copying part of a web page for illustration purposes in a document. I am impressed by the small size of an OOo doc compared to word though.
