I've created a word 2010 document with embedded files (insert-object).
Normally the users can open these files by double click on the created icons.
When I protect the document using editing restrictions "no changes" the user can not open the embedded files.
Is there a way to exclude the inserted objects from protection ?

Notice in the Restrict Formatting and Editing task pane that launches when you turn on protection, beneath No changes (Read only) is the word Exceptions. Select your object's icon and check the box labelled Everyone. Then turn on Protection.
