I have windows xp sp2 and Norton Internet Security. I only have 25 and 110 open when I do a port scan but I need to open another port. Where and how do I change port settings.
Thank for any responses!

Why do you need another port open (what application), and what port is it?

Obviously this system is a mail server, since you have SMTP (25) and POP (110). Do you need IMAP (143) open also?

From what I recall, NIS requires you to configure applications to have access, so you need to know what application needs access and which port(s) it needs to open.

I have a program that needs port 34598 open. I have Linksys/Cisco router where I have set up port forwarding from this ip address. I have opened a port (34598) in Norton but it still says (using Port Detective) that the port is blocked. Do I need to open a port in windows? I can't figure out where I have gone wrong. When I shut down Norton and used windows firewall I got the message that the port was in use.
Please help?

So you have configured your router to forward any packets on your public IP address, port 34598, to your computer's IP address at port 34598?

First, open a command window and type 'netstat -a -n' and look for a line that says:

Code:
TCP 0.0.0.0:34598 0.0.0.0 LISTENING

-or-

UDP 0.0.0.0:34598 *:*

That will tell you if the application was able to open the port on your local machine.

If it is not open using NIS, then shut NIS down, use the Windows firewall, and issue the same command.

You cannot "open a port in windows" an application attempts to open a port, and the operating system either allows it, or denies it. In your case, NIS is telling the OS what it should do.

Don't forget that you need to register the application and the port in NIS in order to allow the incoming connections to that port.

If the port is open on your local machine, then it is probably the configuration of your router, or the ISP may block that port for inbound connections (unlikely but possible).

I'm trying to open up port 45000 for my uTorrent.
I using a static ip now.
I got a dlink adsl modem and dlink di-524.
I have disabled my windows firewall (win XP) and also DMZ my computer in the dlink di-524 router settings.
But the port still closed when i checked it.
Is there anything else that still blocking it?
please help me...

I am trying to set up a game server for Starsiege (1998 and considered a dead game by many.)
When I create a game it works fine on my computer but nobody else can see my server. I've been told it's because I'm behind my Linksys router's firewall.
Is it possible to make the server visible to others without removing the router ?
I currently have 1 computer and 1 wireless router wired into the primary Linksys router.
Like this:
- 2nd computer
- Wireless Linksys -
- internet phone svc.
Cable > Linksys -

- 1st computer (where I want server)

... i got the message that the port was in use"
Got the message from what?

First of all to avoid any confusion; any port scan must come from the outside of your network.

Not even Norton can scan your network for open ports from the inside.

You will have to open the port on your router. Let's leave Norton out of this for the moment; lets assume it has been 'turned completely off' and has no impact on anything.

You should run a scan (a proper scan) to determine if you are past the router at this point. If you are not of course you have to look at making the corrections at the router.
Repeating the above.

Once done the only thing that can be in the way of your application is TCP/IP filtering on Windows 2000.

... in Settings : Local Area Connection : Properties : Internet protocol : properties : Advanced : Options : tcp/ip filtering : properties. Check the settings.

If TCP/IP filtering is enabled (always is on my machine) then add your port to the list of 'permitted' ports.

Incidently, applications cannot open ports closed using this facility like they can with XP's Firewall.

My guess is your trouble is with the correct setting on the router. Please let me know how this worked out and what you found.
