Is is possible to open up internet explorer (or some other application) to view a .jpg that I have visible through a portal by clicking on the .jpg without using a plug-in? I have seen the launch.it plug in but I was curious if there was something easier I am overlooking.

Thanks.

you could go to script maker create a script and make it "open file" choose the file. then put a button in the d.b. to preform the script you just make...just a thought.

darrenrd > this will not work as the script will constantly insert the same "name_image.jpg" u Specified in the script...

depends....are your images linked or "embeded" =inserted into FM?

1]
don't go the route where u point to C:\program files\some_app.exe as some other user might not have the same application running from the same HD location

2]
Right-Click on the container field --->Insert Object...-->Create From File {and browse to your file...u decide if u want to link or [/b]embed[/b] the document thread295-613559}

Next time u double click on the container file ...that file will be opened by the default application associatied by its extention...

eg. I have set IE to open all my .JPGs while I like to use some other software (free to quickly open .GIFs, .TIFFs etc. docs wihtout starting the Adobe or some other Mega Application.

All the best!

Thanks for all the responses.

Your solution works just as you said. I was just inserting a picture and not the object.

I am new to filemaker. Can a script be written to produce the same results as what you just explained how to do manually? I am going to play around with that.

Thanks again.

As you mentioned before. I want to be able to make this dynamic so that I don't have to tie a specefic path to the script. I want the script to work just as the way I manually inserted the object. Basically prompt the user for the path.

ok then the script assigne to some "Browse/Insert" button would be:
------------------------
Go to Field["image field"]
Insert Picture[]
Open Url[]
------------------------

All the best!

actually it will work with just:
------------
Go to Field"image field"
Insert Picture[]
-----------

Thanks again. I was trying to make it more complicated than it needed to be.

That works but my solution is not as smooth to the user than I want it to be.

Here's what I am shooting for. I have a portal which contains photos of property. It's nice to view the actual picture via the portal. I want to be able to click a button to enlarge the picture (similar to how it's done in ebay for example) by using a different app (ex. IE6). Is it possible to have the user insert an object as you explain above using my script and store the image as a picture and as a separate object field? That way I could view the picture and tie the object to an enlarge button to view it elsewhere if desired? I can do it by making the user enter the picture/object twice but that seems inefficient. Also how can you make the enlarge button (script) open the object? I have only been able to make it set that field, not actually open it.

Thanks for the help. I am slowly learning how to do things in FM that I can do in other DB'S.

welll u can insert an image that is 10000x10000 px if u like and then use the properties of the container (size the field in Layoud Mode) to "scale to fit" the field size u made in portal. Ones the user click on the image and opens it with the program associated with that file (eg. IE for all the JPGs) the image will show in its full size 10000 x 10000 px.....no need for the thumb--> full view apporach.
All the best!

OK, That makes sense but that is where I was getting lost before. If I show the image in the portal (not the object), it doesn't allow me to double click on the image to open via another app. It only allows me to do that when I have the object (the generic object icon) visible in the portal.

I must be missing something here.

well...that is where the tale ends....I am affraid u will have to look into plugins....I know that images with relative paths can be opened/access by 'Open URL
'
where IMG_field would hold relative path eg. C:\images\image.jpg
but that is not the case for you as u want the image inside the DB...sorry buddy can't help you more than this....perhaps some more experienced developers can help.
Good Luck!
