hello everyone,

we bought the adr60 internal ide device bundled with tapeware. we wanted to use it to backup two partitions in our fileserver, but i simply can not get the drive to work. i tried the bundled tapeware, updated to the newest version, but tapeware didnt show anything to backup on the server. no harddrives no partitions or anything. i tried ntbackup, but ntbackup keeps saying "there is no unused media, please insert one". so insert a fresh formated, adr2 60gb tape, but it wont work.
after all this i tried installing the tape drive in one of our not often used windows xp workstations. i noticed that i have to get an upgrade (for nearly 200$) to backup network drives with tapeware, so again i tried ntbackup. ntbackup denies recognition of the drive (i also tried to use the method with travan or miniqic, but then "there is no unused media, please insert one" this error message appears again). after that i looked in the removable media manager from windows xp, and i saw that device dosnt show up there, neither as library nor as media...

oh.... and i tried on both the win2k server and the xp workstation the signed driver from onstream, but nothing i could do solved the problem.

any help would be appreciated! and sorry for my bad english!

with the ADR2.60ide drive, first make sure you have the drivers that onstream doesn't have on their website anymore (adr2k.sys, i think). Now, make sure your windows is up to date (service packs and what not) and go into computer management (right click my computer, chose manage) Now under Removable storage you should see the drive. If you have a tape in the drive, just right-click on it and you should see an inventory option. select it and it will read what's in the drive. then under the drive's listing in media you'll see and 'unrecognized media' or something like that. right click and choose format. It should then be listed in your media pool. As far as tapeware is concerned, it's not good sw, that's why they give it to you for free. :).

Let me know if you have any more questions

do you recommend uninstalling the tapeware software and using ntbackup?

i have read in antoher post, that your solution will only work, if i stop or remowve the tapeware service.

why do they sell such a crappy software like tapeware, when it doesn't even work?

but thanks for your good reply.
i hope you can answer my new question quick.

Yes, definitely uninstall tapeware, because sometimes it tries to load it's own drivers for the device. Either uninstall it or at least stop the services so tapeware doesn't claim the drive as it's own, and stop ntbackup from being able to take posession of the drive. As far as why they distributed it with tapeware. 1) They provided their own support with it, so we only had to support the hardware. 2) It is little known and therefore cheap for us, and we pass the savings on to you, the consumer. :)

But yes, Tapeware is NOT a good sw.

Thanks,
Greg
