I have a compaq presario r3000 series laptop. It supposedly has 512mb of ram, but only shows as having 383mb. Is this because the graphics card (which doesn't have its own dedicated ram) is eating up some of the ram or what? I don't really understand this, can someone tell me if this is correct?

Thanks,

Enter your bios and check to see if you have 512mb listed if not. You might want to check what the max ram you can use with your laptop. Older laptops can only max out at 384mb

More than likely shared video memory. You have 512Mb, 128Mb is likely being used as video memory which leaves 384Mb or thereabouts.
This should be configurable in the bios, you should be able to adjust shared video ram settings from 32Mb or 64Mb through to 128Mb, have a poke around the bios and see what you find.

Sounds like you could have 128Mb allocated to your vid card. Again, check in the BIOS.

As regards the 383Mb instead of 384Mb, don't worry - my Tosh shows 503Mb instead of 504Mb with 8Mb allocated for the vid card.

You could use something like AIDA32 - - to get a full check on the Presario's spec.
