A coworker has recently decided to pursue his CCIE training (R&S) through an online program. It's pricey at $3,000 - however, he's getting a lot of stuff. He has free rack rentals, the four CCIE textbooks he'll need, workbooks, and best of all, a tutor who will work with him and provide support and assistance while he finishes.

I brought this up to see if anyone might know of something similar for CCVP. I'm not talking about a boot camp for 10 days for $5G. I think if I could get rack rental time and personal support to help me over my problem areas (something I don't have now), I would be really interested in something like that. The link below is similar to what I'm talking about, thought it doesn't look like this is offered quite yet.

Crunchyhippo,

You have several options, maybe not a slick high-priced "package" deal but with a $3,000 budget you could get a great lab and lots of training material.

If you search for VoIP Labs or "voice" on Ebay you will find some complete labs from $700 to about $2,500, most offer tons of training books and CDs/DVDs with them.

This way you will have your own lab, as opposed to a "lab rental", that you can setup and teardown any time and any way that you want, and when you are done, you should be able to get back 50-80% of the value by selling it again on Ebay.

For about $1,000 you can get the complete CCVP library at - this is over 54 hours of video training for the CCVP. I have seen packages fron CBT Nuggets discounted, just join the site and opt for emails from them :) Some of the Ebay labs might have these already "packaged" with them :) - you just need to read what is offered, once someone gets a cert, they no longer need all that material and tend to dump it on Ebay.

As far as expert advice, here at Tek-Tips you have several forums - VoIP, Cisco: Call Manager and this Cisco Cert area, you also have the Cisco Learning Network forum as well as the Cisco and VoIP forums at
This is just 3 forums of many that are out there, just do a "Google" for Cisco VoIP forums or Cisco Call Manager forums etc.

By going this route, you are out $3,000 only for the time you are training, once you are done, you should be able to get back most of your investment :) Then you have to look at what the training really cost you :)

I am not ready for CCVP yet, I am working on CCNA Voice - already have a Cisco 1760 Voice router, Cisco MC3800 and a bunch of training material on the way and I only have about $350 invested so far :)

Hope this helps!

The closest thing I've found for training courses for the Professional level certs is through Skill Soft. They offer the recommended training for each test.

I've had opportunity to attend a few of their online courses, and would highly recommend it to anyone if they get the chance.

lerdalt, since you've taken the SkillSoft program, can you tell me if they offered any kind of support beyond just giving you the information? I can get the information I need - that's not a problem. My issue is getting assistance when I can't work through problems. And the online forums I can already access just aren't sufficient for my needs. Sometimes I get an answer, sometimes I don't, sometimes the answer isn't relevant, sometimes I have to wait days, etc, etc.

I'll check into the SkillSoft people. Maybe they have such support. Thank you.

I wouldn't say it was so much post-class support, but access to instructors during the live class, and the instructors were top-notch.

I see - I thought it was online training, not an actual class. This probably isn't what I'm looking for. I would need to be able to go at my own pace and not worry about deadlines.

This is a multiple post...I put in my 3 cents (yes, I'm worth it!) in the other post...

By the way---what exactly does "pwned" mean, and how do you pronounce it, and why the "p"? Is it to really drive the point home (like saying "Dumb, with a capitol "D")?

LOL where did you hear that from?! In online games it usually goes to meaning they owned that person.. Or atleast it was that way a few years ago when I actually played WoW.

Burt,

Read your post in the other post ???, as you can see from my post I am with you!!

Just got and started the CBT Nuggets for CCNA Voice last night and they are VERY WELL DONE!!!

I would think that the 54 + hours of video instruction for CCVP that CBT Nuggets has plus ALL the different forums out there would be more then enough to get your answers "at your own pace" .

Just some thoughts!

ciscoguy33, everyone knows - or should know - that watching a video isn't the same as being able to successfully implement home labs with all of its diverse scenarios. How to do this, where to plug that, what to use here-issues.

What happens when you're stuck and can't get resolution from Google or a forum, and the videos never address this particular problem? You're outta luck, that's what, unless you have someone who can help just you - either online or in person. The online forums are at best iffy, since one may or may not get a resolvable answer, assuming someone bothers to reply at all. Didn't you read my earlier post on this?

Many of us on here will all agree, that some of our key resources for success include:
tek-tips
cisco learning network
books
cbtnuggets
and cisco's website.

Take a look between tek-tips and the cln, and I think you will find that most questions get answered, and usually at least a response rather quickly.

I always look at those points of getting stuck on the labs as the real learning opportunities. They truly teach you how to troubleshoot, research, and ask for help as necessary.

I'm currently in the process of starting to work on the CCVP, and with all the certs I've studied for, I've never once worried about getting stuck in those scenarios that aren't covered in the material. In fact, I tend to setup scenarios that aren't covered just to see if I can make it work.

Crunchyhippo,

You said - "What happens when you're stuck and can't get resolution from Google or a forum, and the videos never address this particular problem?" I have taught CCNA in a Cisco Network Academy since 1999 and I DON"T have all the answers and neither does ANY instructor, even triple CCIEs so I don't think you will find an answer or training program that will handle EVERYTHING short of maybe having several CCIE's sit with you as you do labs :)

Watching a video is only 1 part of it, having the right books as well as these forums as lerdalt said, I would also include the Cisco forum over at .

I am astounded by the number of CCIEs who hang out over there and answer questions in GREAT detail WHEN ASKED CORRECTLY !!!!

And yes, attitude comes accross in posts and you learn to listen to what EVERYONE has to say and use what is good for you. I have seen people post and not get answers, I then go back a few pages and see where on a prior post they gave the forum attitude when people tried to help and now they don't get any help :)

I also see where friendships are formed and LOTS of these posters communicate by email on issues and subjects better discussed outside a public forum - so you build RELATIONSHIPS in these forums and find people willing to help you AND you help others!

I have gone to 5 different Cisco Networkers conventions (now called Cisco Live) and have formed friendships with CCNPs, CCIEs and CCSP all over the world who I feel I could email or make a call if needed - IT IS CALLED NETWORKING and it works for training also :)

You came in this forum and asked a question and we are giving you what has worked for us, if you find the perfect training, then please post a link :)

I agree with the rest of the group Crunchy,
Forums are not for everyone. They are generally a two way process and those who tend to contribute generally receive the most/fastest aide. That said, I would begin connecting with both this forum as well as CLN and begin... well.. networking!

Now regarding your initial question I would take a peak at as this seems to be what you are looking for. Either classroom or online training, access to instructors, rack-time etc. I hope this helps. I do want you to know that reading through this post seemed as if you were lashing at the people trying to help you. I may be wrong but if that is the case it would explain why it takes so long to receive assistance. Just a thought and I could be mistaken!

I use that site too! A friend Chetan from CLN turned me on to it!

Gene, only 9 hours left on this but thought you may be interested in some Voice CBTs

He has a couple and they are cheap for 60 hours of video! Emailed you but realized that you may not be at work any longer!

Billy,

Thanks, but do you know the saying "Been there, done that", well for Ebay it is "Saw that, BOUGHT that" :)

I got that about 2 weeks ago as well as a nice find of the CCNA Voice CBT Nugget that came on the DVD with the IOS's for the 1760-V router I got :)

I am doing the CCNA Voice CBT first - very well done!!!!!!!!Then I will move onto the others! I am on "Spring Break" starting Thursday at 7PM, for those who do not work at a college - that is a week of paid vacation while the kids hit the beaches :) SORRY, I just had to add that but you could shame me by showing your pay stub :-(

Let me know when you are done with security and ready for voice and we can talk ;-) ;-)

Yeah, I've got a friend that used to work as a tech at a community college. The stories of the girls running around campus, going to the arcade for a 3 hour lunch, the strip club for lunch and playing pool with the entertainers.

Oddly enough, he got tired of not making enough money and no future potential, so he left for a big business.

Sheesh.... The money might not be there, but you can't argue about the fringe benefits
