We've got a client who wants to set-up an online ordering system so that his customers can go into his site and check stock levels and place orders for items.

What is important for the shop is that no actual financial transactions will ever take place - it must merely be a list of items and a shopping basket. the same as buying something online exept there is never a money transaction.

someone has mentioned SAP but that's all so far.

Wow - you could probably do it for a lot cheaper than SAP if that is all you need.... just use a server side scripting and a DB....

SAP Hmmm! Do you happen to have a few million and a handy AS400 or 2 to run it on [lol]

But seriously. Most shop cart software should fit the bill, just needs an email invoicing module inplace of the payment gateways.

I'm working on such a think in ColdFusion right now. The biggest issue you will need to look at is how the stock is going to be updated on the web accessable database.

One thing I have done is where I upload ups tracking numbers to a web accessable database, in MS Access I create an .html file, place it in the temp directory, then call IE & that .html file. The file automatically does a form submit of all the data to a server page that uploads the data so that the tracking numbers are accessable through the web. (this is done because on the servers we do not allow any outside computers direct access to the database for security reasons).

It's just one idea of how you might get local data onto the web.

Try OSCOMMERCE. It's free. It's not that hard to configure and you should be able to set it up to not accept payments easily enough too.
