You are going to have to read some books whatever you do. More interesting ways of learning though are to get hold of some cheap second user kit off ebay and play with that.

When I was studying for my CCNA I bought three cisco 1601 routers with an additional WIC-1T serial card in one of them, and two back to back X21 cables to connect them all together.
You can normally pick them quite cheaply.

Have a look on Ebay. Not sure where you are, but I am in the UK and paid around £50 - £75 per router, and £10.00 per cable.
