Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me here. I have a computer running Windows 2003. I want to create an online file backup server through it. I am new to servers so I am not sure if that's the correct terminology. I basically want to set something up so I can help my family and friends store their files for backup onto the server automatically through the Internet. Their are many pay services online that do this and I was just wondering if someone could explain to me or guide me somewhere that explains how to set that up. Thanks in advance.

Nick

simplest way would be to run the FTP service on your server

An FTP Server on your server and a scripted FTP program should suffice as James Bird suggests.

Consider though, that these pay services often offer low prices for low quantity of data. They also offer encryption and client software that only backs up the deltas of the file changes - meaning that if you have a 100 MB file, it is NOT backing up the entire file each night - it's only backing up the changes in that file. This can SIGNIFICANTLY lower the amount of backup space needed and the amount of time the backups take.
