Hi guys

We have an Avaya with One-X portal setup and users using the Avaya Communicator on laptops at home. each user currently has a VPN into Head Office so they can register to the phone system and use the Avaya Communicator. They have been experiencing intermittent issues with poor call quality and this has been proven to happen only when the communicator is used off site. There I.T guys have asked the below, are you able to assist me with the below questions??

Detailed Network Diagram of the different possible connection flows on a call via VPN.
Including used ports and protocols
Call from/to VPN Caller <> UK local Phone
Call from/to VPN Caller <> other VPN Caller
Call from/to VPN Caller <> external user > customer

Described Reason, why external callers must establish a VPN connection to connect to your phone system and aren’t connected direct via internet to the system?
Per definition, these are mobile users and every good phone solution which supports mobile users, should be able to do this without a dedicated VPN connection…

Thanks

Phil

Only you can really answer the first questions by making test calls and capturing traces, but they are correct there should be no need for a VPN if configured correctly. We have numerous customers and ourselves using communicator or one-x mobile remotely without issues.

If they want a diagram then i would take it, it would be Avaya Communicator on Laptop to Home User Router, then via Remote Dial In VPN to Head Office Router - would it then contact the IP Office or the One-X Portal Server first???

Cheers

Phil

Communicator talks to the IPO first to create the SIP extension then tries to communicate with the one-x for presence.

So would I be looking at something like this then

Call from/to VPN Caller <> UK local Extension
Avaya Communicator on Laptop > Home Users Router > Remote Dial In VPN > Head Office Router > Avaya IP Office > Avaya One-X Portal Server > Avaya IP Office > Internal User Extension

Call from/to VPN Caller <> other VPN Caller
Avaya Communicator on Laptop > Home Users Router > Remote Dial In VPN > Head Office Router > Avaya IP Office > Avaya One-X Portal Server > Avaya IP Office > Head Office Router > Remote Dial In VPN > Home User Router > Avaya Communicator on Laptop

Call from/to VPN Caller <> external user > customer
Avaya Communicator on Laptop > Home Users Router > Remote Dial In VPN > Head Office Router > Avaya IP Office > Avaya One-X Portal Server > Avaya IP Office > BT Network

cheers for you help Pepp77
