What exactly do you mean? Nothing stops you from having a station of type 2410 or 4610 with no real phone connected to it, but with IP Softphone enabled, and use one-x communicator.
There is a station of type 'virtual' in CM that cannot be used to make or receive calls. It's a station type that exists only to have a coverage page to get to voicemail. They're convenient because they don't use a license, but you can't use them for things like making and receiving calls.
In newer systems you get unlimited softphone licenses where you used to need to pay for them before. Regardless, in CM you're licensed for a certain number of stations. Use them however you like. You don't save anything from a capacity perspective using softphones instead of hardphones.
You can have a softphone share a hardphone - like if I wanted to control my desk phone with one-x or work from home and use one-x instead of my hardphone.
You will have to use a station Lic. for a station. If you use a station as a soft phone it will use 1 station lic, and 1 soft phone lic.
Looks like you will need to clean up un-used phones. or buy more Lic.
