Good day,

I have a problem that I do not know how to fix. I have three PC's on a switch with a printer. It is not connected to a router as they just have to print. Two PC's is working fine. The third is the problem. It is running XP and no PC can ping this PC and this PC cannot ping any other PC and the printer, although it is in the same network & subnet range as the other. I can ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1 and its own IP address. This is what I tried already:

Tried to ping the printer and checked if it shows up in the ARP table. Just reply no ARP entries found.
Tried to reset the TCP/IP
Changed ports on the switch
Changed cables with other PC's cables that are working

Any idea what I can try to fix this problem?

Stefan

Why don't you give us the results of the output of ipconfig /all from a CMD prompt on one of the working PCs as well as the non-working PC so we can compare.

But, I would say that you need to have the following settings in your network stack on all devices. Since there is no router or DHCP server providing them, you have to manually set them up in the network settings.
IP address: 192.168.X.Y with X being the same on all PCs and Y being unique (e.g. 192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.20)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0 (meaning that none is unspecified)

Workgroups should be the same on all PCs
You should also have the File and Printer sharing exclusion in Windows Firewall turnen ON
You don't have any third party firewall - correct??

IPreset and winsockreset have resolved this on a couple of machines after all the things goombawaho suggested have failed to do it.

netsh int ip reset c:\ipreset.log

netsh winsock reset

Yeah, ^^ that's the "hit it with a hammer BEFORE troubleshooting" approach, but I approve of that method too!!

Was funny. Hit the batch file that does the ipreset before I pulled the info from the text file of the same name to paste. Next attempt to go to the web gave an error message about failure to connect. Before the afternoon was over took the network apart and set it up from scratch along with 3 of the computers. Paid the price of not having the router settings documented, since corrected.

Stefan,
You mentioned it's on a switch, not a hub. If so, then typically that means it supports DHCP unless you have that feature disabled. Agree with Goom here that we need to have more info, including what ipconfig /all shows on the problematic PC and another one that works (need at least IP, Subnet Mask, and Gateway). Also, I assume you've tried to ping the IP addresses of the other devices, not just their NETBIOS name.

Good day to you all. Thanks for your replies. The problem is solved. It strange but somebody said I should try this. This what I have done:

Shut down PC
Remove power cable completely
Remove LAN cable from ethernet port
Wait 10 min
Insert power cable
Restart PC
Plug LAN cable back on ethernet port
And it started to work again

Well, that should have been the first step before you posted!!! Kidding, but also serious. Before you go all ninja on a problem you always shutdown and unplug then re-power all devices in question.
