One DS1 card: splitting B channels to multiple groups? 1

We have a Merlin Legend with one PRI that was running 20 lines before. Now we're porting over some lines and will be running more than 40 lines on one PRI. I understand that only 23 lines can be active at one time. Of these 40+ lines, 5 of these lines are primary business lines and I would like to guarantee 5 channels for those lines. My idea was that I could create two B channel groups, one with 5 channels and the other with 18, both running off the same PRI. Is this possible, or am I limited to one B group per PRI? Or is ther any other way to do this? Thanks.

Ok. Answered my own question there. Now the question is, somehow I am not able to assign more lines to the B channel group than that which was already there. For instance, before, we had lines 813-835 assigned to B channel group 1. Now, we have another block of DIDs and I want to assign them to lines 845-864 and assign them to another (or the same) B channel group. How do I do that? The system beeps at me when I just try to add lines directly to the B channel group. Thanks.

If I am reading everything correctly, you stated that you have just 1 PRI, and only 1 T1 Module.

OR, do you have a second T1 Module?

You can send all the D-I-D's to a single PRI (T1 Module) that you can build tables for. (16 total)

So, unless you are adding a 2nd T1 Module, you should be able to point the NEW D-I-D's to the new one with out messing with the "Lines" portion of the programming.

Ok. That's what I thought. But yes, I only have one 100D module.

As a clarification, I was messing with the lines portion because we have multiple phones that need to access the same phone number, and so I programmed certain lines with certain phone numbers so that I could do that w/o using coverage or call pickup groups etc. I guess I don't have much of a choice with the rest of the DIDs.

Then I have two questions: is it possible to have some of the incoming routing be by line appearance, so that line 813 is dedicated to a phone number (the setup I described above), but then have the remaining of the DIDs (ie the new ones) be routed by dial plan. Then, for the numbers routed by dial plan, how does the outbound calling work, with the sent telephone number? Thanks.

I get the impression you are confused about how a PRI with DID numbers actually works.

At the Central Office Switch when a PRI is provisioned it is set up as follows: a Trunk Group of B Channels and a Trunk Group for the D Channel. All the DID numbers you are assigned will utilize all B Channels for incoming service that are in that B Channel Trunk Group. You may split them up in the Legend, but that won't change the way the CO Switch picks a B Channel to send the call to the Legend (all B Channels in same Trunk Group.) So if you want to dedicate a group of B Channels for a specific group of DID numbers, you need to place an order with your service provider to add another Trunk Group to the PRI service and specify which B Channels of the 23 you want in that other Trunk Group.

Some service providers may or may not offer this feature. All CO switches, the real ones (4ESS, 5ESS, DMS10, DMS100, DMS200, DMS250, DMS500, Ericsson, Siemens, etc.) provide this capability whether or not the service provider offers it to the subscriber.

Now in relation to the Legend/Magix, I don't see any specific type of problem doing this, but you might want to read the Feature Reference document for the Legend/Magix to understand how the PRI works and the interactions with other features. That way you may have a better view of your application in regards to the limitations of PRI service on the Legend/Magix PBX.

In regards to the Legend/Magix and CLID for PRI, it has REAL limitations!! That is covered in the Feature Reference document. You might also search this forum for that subject matter or read all the ones covering the PRI subject. PRI has been covered extensively on this forum.

Hope this helps!

If you are really worried - that you will have more than 23 channels in use at one time - then you simply need to add a 2nd T1 module - and of course order a 2nd T1/PRI service - either for another full 23 channels - or something less, e.g., 10 channels (partial T1). This would give you 33 channels or more. Incomming calls could come in via either T1/PRI module.

I've been reading over this forum looking for a Merlin Legend 7.0 problem I am having and this one seems to be close.

I have a PRI that has had only 12 B channels in it, we add the other 11 to it recently and want to break them down so we can dial out on 6 of the channels, the six need to be outbound only. ATT tells me they can do it cause I'm in KY and it will need to be done in our switch. We programmed the switch to have these two groups, but the calls still come in on those 6 channels.

What are we missing? Can it be done?

Any help will be grateful, Even dumb looks wont hurt at this point.

Well - you can't really prevent inbound calls from comming in on the 6 channels you want to use for outbound. However - each channel has a line assigned to it. You can break-up the lines into two line pools. All of the channels are probably in Pool 70 right now - and when you press 9 to get an outside line - the system is choosing an available channel out of your 23 - to grab a line. Pool 70 is also your default outbound route for both local and long distance calls. So if you want to create another pool for outbound dialing only - you would need to remove 6 of the lines from pool 70 (there should be 23 lines currently) - and then put those 6 lines in another pool, like pool 890. You would then need to change the default outbound pool for local and long distance calls - from pool 70 to pool 890.

Oops, I missed a letter, ATT CAN'T do it.

Thanks for the info, I think that is where we are now, We have two pools, dial nine for one and two for the other.

We have a IVR that the Merlin hands off calls to. During heavy call periods, we needed to be able to get out too. We do have a couple of copper lines, but they just are not enough.

Have any good alternatives, besides another PRI?

Roger

Just add pool 70 as a secondary route for both local and long distance - under subA Pools. Leave pool 890 or whatever pool has the 6 channels as the primary outbound route. If the analog lines are in a 3rd pool - you can add that pool as a 3rd route for outbound calls. That should give 23+ your analog lines as a way to dial out in total. If that's not enough - add more lines - either analog or T1/PRI

This still wont solve the issue of channels being outbound only will it? Or am I just missing something here.

Roger

Roger,
Are you telling me that AT&T does not know how to put B channels in a separate Trunk Group that has NO DID numbers in it?? Now I think that is kind of odd! Since the tariff offering for PRI includes multiple Trunk Group capability unless the KY PUC does not allow that option. Here in
California that is an option with Pacific Bell/AT&T. They do change a small monthly fee for that option, but it is available. You might want to see if the AT&T/KY has any PRI info on their website if you can't get any rep to provide the right info. Otherwise I would escalate up the ladder to a 1st level supervisor or dept head to get what you need!

Hope this helps!
