Hi,
I need to capture data from one program (Pico) and export it directly into an Excell spread sheet column on the fly. Then when I begin a second run the data goes into another column and then a third and fourth etc etc. This is to avoid labourious copy or cut and paste from one to another.

yeh - you might wanna supply a tiny bit more info...

The quality of answer is directly proportional to the quality of question...

My appologies xlbo,
I am running a BioOrbit 1250 luminometer linked to a Pico ADC 212. It converts light emision to a voltage which is logged over a period of 10 minutes once every 100 milliseconds. I need to capture that data from PicoLog and export it directly into an Excell spread sheet column on the fly. It is a single tube luminometer and will only capture one set of data per 10 minute run. I need to then do a second run and a third run and so on with all the data being captured imediately being transfered to a second and third column etc in the same spread sheet as the first in Excell. I am logging 6000 data points each time and would expect to do this 20-30 or more times per experiment. Cuting and pasting all this data onto one sheet for statistical analysis is time consuming and labourious.
I hope there is sufficient information there.
Regards

ok - PicoLog - what kind of application is this? web based or standalone ? If standalone, does it expose itself to VBA ?

If web based, it is entirely possible to use either RSS or a web query to extract the data into excel. If it is standalone, then you will have to hope that it exposes itself to VBA so that excel can "talk" to it...

The data you need to capture is it only display data or is it written to afile by the source programme.
If it's display only then you're going to have problems unless the source programme has some sort of macro ability.
I can't think of a way to get Excel to read data from ascreen directly

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by

jus tlooking at the Picolog website, the software doesn't support VBA etc, but it does suport DDE, not something I've ever used but would that help with Carts problem?

Gents many thx for your patience, and excuse my ignorance.

PicoLog will work with Dynamic Data Exchange, I have been informed and 'can use the driver software to develop programms to collect and analyse data from the unit. It is stand alone.

d'oh - meant DDE when I said RSS !!!

and yes - should do. DDE = Dynamic Data Exchange. You should be able to set up a DDE link to an excel workbook and the data should flow through in pretty much real time. I havn't had much experience with this but have seen it work well for some colleagues that track stock prices etc...

format of a dde statment from a program called
homeplanet.

=HPlanet|Time!jdate

HPlanet is the name of the executable
Time!jdate is the varible to extract.

This places a single value in one cell,
I dont recall seeing a list generated in this way.
I think you will need a vba to move the data as it
comes in.

if it is to be it's up to me
