Whenever a new telnet session is started, right above the login prompt is a line telling what operating system is on that server. How do I prevent this from showing, or how can I edit it?

Thanks,

The /etc/motd is displayed after login, this OS display is before login.

I THINK vi /etc/default/telnetd
then BANNER " "
.

Correction.

If like to eliminate the telnet OS banner and create a seperate banner for For telnet, this is easily done by creating the file /etc/default/telnetd and adding the statement
BANNER=""

This is eliminates the "SunOS 2.8" banner for Telnet

One more question. When you first boot up and other times (I think) the banner displays the Mac address. How do you keep the mac address from being displayed?

Hi

Contents of /etc/issue file are displayed before login.
if you remove this file it won't display OS information
before login prompt.

Hope it helps
