I can't believe I did this but I was working on my computer I have had win98/win2k dual boot for 3 months now and I decided to just stick with win2k. I had problems for the past 3 days getting rid of 98 I tried fdisk, format from 2k side and yesterday I finally got fdisk to work BUT I didn't format the c: drive before I rebooted computer.!! OMG
ok c: and d: are one hard drive c partition is 15 gig with win98 and d partition is 15 gig with win2k but of course c: is the active partition. Now all I get is "searching for boot record from Ide-0..OK" and it stays there.
I tried boot disk wont work it doesn't go that far.
PLEASE tell me how to fix this.

amd 1000Mhz computer dvd,cd-rom,128mb ram,30 gig HD
Thanks in advance

The most likely reason you can't get to the boot disk is because of the boot device priority in BIOS. Change the BIOS setting to be something like Floppy/HD/CDROM, then boot the system from the floppy and see if that works. Post your results back here... Nate Gagne

After checking that the floppy is the priority boot device, maybe you'll have to go to fdisk and set D: to be bootable. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Hmm ok I stayed up late last night formatting a 10 gig hard-drive with win98 and i added it to the computer as master but then i fell asleep so I'm gonna boot now and I will check out the bios If i can get in someone set a password on it because that was the first thing i tried I called the guy who made my computer and i'm waiting for him to call me back. i'l respond again after i boot the computer. Thx

I think what happened is when you formated 'c' you got rid of the boot record...I would think all you can do is boot up with a floppy...reinstall 98 or 2000 onto the c drive...after which you will tehn be able to view the contents on your d drive once again....then backup important files and do one more final fdisk/format and reinstall 98/2000! ...this is what I would do.....

ok weird its still doing the same thing "searching for boot record from IDE-0..Ok"

and i went to the bios but its weird looking only 3 options which are user password, save & exit setup, and exit without saving. amibios setup utility version 1.23???
This isnt the bios is it?

cshaffer It wont boot to disk I tried booting from disk,or cdrom drive now i have another problem I accessed that setup but couldnt get into the bios and so i kept re-booting and i got tired of typing in password so i removed password it asked for new password i hit spacebar and now I'm really locked out :( CRAP well I can't get other hard-drive to boot either. What will happen if i remove the battery that will clear the bios password right? but what other settings will it erase that i will have to set back up???? Also why won't it boot from other hard-drive???
OMG its getting worse!!!

WOW....before you blow something up...or lock yourself out of your house (or office).....then things would be getting weird.....what password did you change?
we will start with that question

:)

UMMMM dude have you read my problems? i changed bios PW not to be ignorant because i need all the help i can get but ...

Step 1: Clear CMOS with jumper or DIP switch on motherboard.

Step 2: There must be a setting somewhere in the BIOS for boot device priority. Trust me. Change it to Floppy first.

Step 3: Boot from floppy disk.

Step 4: At the a:\ prompt, type
Code:
fdisk /mbr

Step 5: Remove floppy and reboot.

Step 6: If steps 1-5 did not solve your problems, continue to step 7.

Step 7: Boot from floppy disk again, at a:\ prompt type
Code:
fdisk
. In fdisk, make your "D" partition primary and active. Quit fdisk.

Step 8: Remove floppy and reboot. If things don't work from here, post again. Nate Gagne

......k good...the bios password...I don't think that taking out the battery will remove the password.....
but you can try...we need to get you into a bootable state here....you need to fdisk d00d and format...you have seriously corrupted the HD's file structure when you where fdisking and what not....try just entering a space for the password???

let me know....we can get this figured out!

Thanks alot ngagne I got it booting now with my extra hd lol I was having issues with hd jumpers but now im in and formatting the c: drive on the hard-drive i messed up. Thanks hotfusion also . And mr schaffer i got two thing to tell you 1. You aren't funny and you arent any help at all! :(
2. If i lock myself out of my house today ITS YOUR FAULT! :)

Ok now ngagne I'm formatting the problem drive now so that will fix that but to clear bios i understand i need to remove battery. About how long should i leave it out and also when i went there originally it wasnt the bios that i've seen before it was some kinda weird setup utility. SO once i go back there how can i get the real bios?

its weird looking only 3 options which are
1.user password
2.save & exit setup
3.exit without saving.
amibios setup utility version 1.23???
This isnt the bios is it?
i tried holding f1-f12 and even ctrl+shift+s but del is only key to access setup which brings up only those 3 options. Thanx alot

There should be a jumper or switch on your motherboard to clear the BIOS password. Nate Gagne

Sorry ngagne but if u look at his posts it didnt appear helpful smileys or not first response he said was use a boot disk which i already said i tried second response was what pw i changed. lets see if i can't boot up and im talking about bios....lol ok im done

jumpers huh I only see one set of jumpers and there are 5 on it..

ok format done however I can boot to dos with disk but not win2k. this is a seperate issue from the bios correct?
uggg

Uh-oh - that's not good. Last time that happened to me, I had to reload 2k. Maybe someone else knows another way around it? Nate Gagne

Like I said before.....he needs to fidsk these partitions/ reformat..it is to bad but there is no way around this ......wish I could be of more help.....

asking you those questions helps me to narrow down specific problems that are know to cause probs...so if I asked questions, it was just to claify my understanding of the prob.....missing ntldr means that a fat32 is trying to boot up a NTFS system....or maybe even that you might have a disk in the floppy?? Just look there before you format the drive! This is a common solution to that error!

so far then the only solution is to erase everthing I have saved on the win2k partition and reformat it and re-install win2k? Could i maybe install 2k on a empty partition like the d drive i just formatted to then somehow switch it to boot from my old partition? I have alot of files loaded on win2k and hope that would be my last resort. Also dont know if this makes a difference but I don't recall formatting the win2k partition as ntfs i did the fat32. Thx
