I am a start up programmer working on an OLTP system, based on VB6, DCOM, ADO and SQL Server 7, aiming to track the inventory, as the items are assembled into a finished product in a manufacturing facility. Can you advise me where to review some sample scenarios or solutions on the topic?

Thanks Chip H.,

I will take advantage of your advice. I already developed an unique number generator for each part in each manufacture order, based on the product component hierarchy, which is kept in a legacy database. I will put these numbers on barcode and tie the barcode scanning workstations with a specific location string. For each component I will keep a record, containing the location quantities, which will be deleted after the corresponding manufacture order is marked as completed. The components are not serial numbered, but we have a lot of waste. Another problem is that material of one man. order is often transferred to another. I think to solve the last by improving the barcode worksations' logic with "in" and "out" direction. Passing the check-point "out" direction will substract the components from the current MO and make them available for transfer. After that they receive a new barcode label and go "in" the other MO. How do you think of this?
