I have upgraded to 10.5.5 and am now attempting to use my CanoScan D660U scanner.

I downloaded and installed the latest driver from Canon, which failed to detect any install locations. I manually choose Photoshop, but when I launch the application, it states that the plugin is unavailable.

Digging further into Canon's help pages, I found that the scanner is not going to be supported by Canon in 10.5.

I do not want to discard a scanner which I know works perfectly, just because Canon won't release up-to-date software for it.

Could anyone suggest a work-around?

my setup follows;
iMac intel core 2 duo Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Looks like a problem, but you might try launching PS with the scanner on and see if it shows up under the File menu/import in photoshop. If so see if that works.

Another option to try is, with the scanner on, launch Image Capture (in your Applications folder) and see is that will work. If so, you can Save As and open in Photoshop or you can select photoshop as the default app for opening from Image Capture.

Thanks for the suggestion.

System profiler does see the scanner connected via USB, but neither Photoshop nor Image Capture recognize it.

After informing me that some drivers are unavailable, photoshop prompts me to look in help>system info...

which gives me the following details;

"Plug-ins that failed to load:
CanonPI CS-U 3.9.2X NO VERSION - - from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/CanonPI CS-U 3.9X”
CanonPI CS-U 3.9.2X NO VERSION - - from the file “/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/Import:Export/CanonPI CS-U 3.9X”

Not sure but from what you posted it looks like you have 2 versions in your plugins folder. You might check to see if that's so and move one out of that folder.

You might also look for a prefs folder for the canon scanner software and try trashing them (with the scanner off). then turn it on and see if you can get anything.

Another possibility is to use any button on the scanner to start a scan, as opposed to scanning from your computer's controls and see what happens

Of course, there is the possibility that the machine simply will not work with 10.5. Then you have to decide whether to revert to an earlier version of OSX or get a new scanner.

I got my EPSON scanner to work by setting Photoshop to "Open using Rosetta". Hope that helps.

Thank you all for your assistance.
Using Photoshop running in Rosetta works for me!

A somewhat backward way of doing things really, but there you go.
I notice that the same issue and fix applies for older Epson scanners too.

Thanks again.

You could try VueScan, it's reasonably priced and they have a demo, hamrick.com
