Old Proliant 3000 - strange hanging issue

Hello all,

I'm trying to reconfigure from scratch a Proliant 3000, 333MHz, 256 MB RAM, RAID controller. Ran Smartstart and erased all the configuration. Upon reboot I get to the part where Smartstart is trying to start the EISA configuration manager, loads one cfg file and then freezes completely. I can't pass over this point, tried to clean the NVRAM using the switches, reseated the memory, nothing helped.

Any idea would be really appreciated!

What version of SmartStart are you using? You may need to use an older version.

Also is your System BIOS up to date?

I've tried SmartStart V 4.20, 4.60, 5.40, 5.50, none of the worked! The BIOS is upgraded to the latest version. SmartStart gets stuck when it tries to load SCU (from the SmartStart disk, I suppose). Could it be a problem with the NVRAM?

is it a dual processor box? I bought a 2nd hand one for lab use, and found similar problems with freezing for no reason

turned out that the 2 processors had different cache sizes.

now running it as a single processor box until I get round to locating a matching CPU.

The box is uni-processor. I've created the bootable SCU floppies but got the same result ....the machine has frozen when trying to load the *.cfg files from the second floppy.

Did you try creating the System Erase Disk (floppy) and booting from that to wipe the system? Sometimes a System Erase from SmartStart doesn't wipe everything.

I've already tried your kind sugesstion, did not work. After running the system erase utility from the floppy I am getting the confirmation messgae that every thing was wiped out but I get stuck on the same point, trying to run SCU.
