Old-ish USB scanner on Mac?

I have a now-useless, formerly wonderful scanner that I would really like to get to work with my spiffy new Powerbook. When I shifted to Mac, I did it because mac was supposed to be more problem-free. Help, please!

Check the scanner manufacturer's web site and see if it has software drivers for the MAC.

Thanks, Jim. Tried that. Can't even get them to answer e-mail. Have also checked out SANE (an organization that has front and back ends for lots of now-unsupported scanners (good site: They don't have what I apparently need either.
