Old e-mails reappear after exchange reboot

I'm running Exchange 2003SP1 on Windows 2000 SP4. Whenever I re-boot exchange or stop and start the services... our users get old e-mails that they received before and they show up as unread. Also last time I re-booted.. duplicate contacts appeared in our public folders. Is there a way to stop this?

I am having the same problem and can't seem to find a solution. Everything I read about says that the anti virus is scanning folders it shouldn't be. I've excluded all of our exchange folders and I am still having this happen when I reboot the server or restart the services.

Out of curiosity, any mail that is waiting to be delivered or sent is going to be in the following directories :

C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\PickUp

Wondering if somehow, due to a file system issue, files are hanging out in here, or getting duplicated? Have you defragged the drive with the Exchange files on it lately?

I haven't defragged the drive in a while. Or are you talking about defraging the exchange database?

Also there is nothing in my \exchsrvr\mailroot\vsi 1\pickup but there is a bunch of files in the \badmail and queue folder.

This isn't an issue with the vsi queues, but with a DLL that gets corrupted.

I haven't seen it for a few years, though, and can't remember the details. Will search and let you know if I find anything.

I haven't been able to solve it yet, we just migrated everything to a new server, and we are still having the problem.
