ok, so i have to linksys 4 port dsl/cable router, One of my computers is windows xp, NEW.. just got it a few weeks ago, the other, windows M.E. about 4 years old. When i have them both hooked up to the router, the M.E. freezes, or runs really, REALLY slow. I then must ctrl/alt/delete, and it says explorer is not responding. After that, i have to unplug the M.E. and restart the computer for it to work.

All of this happens on one computer, but the XP works fine!!! I have no clue what to do, anyone got anything?

The first thing to check is the ethernet cable to the Me computer - if possible, swap it with xp cable and see what happens. Next check device manager on the ME machine to make sure your network card is operating correctly.

Have tried both of those, but they don't help... I dont know what the heck it is

OK, next thing...

Are you saying that the ME machine does not behave this way when not connected to the router? If you bypass the router and connect your broadband modem directly to the ME machine what happens?

Hehehe.. sounds like your ME computer wants you to force the NIC card to run at 10 megs. lolz... try that... it should solve your problem...

The ME computer does work when directly plugged in, but I want to run both the computers on a network. So i don't have to keep unplugging and pluggin in...

and what is the thing about the NIC card? How would i do that? :)

ok just go to control panel>network>your adapter>advance

under property select "media type or link speed" and change the value to 10 megs full duplex..

10MBps is fine for your internet connection, but is a waste for a home network. Sharing files/access between PC's is better served at 100MBps.

You can try lowering this setting as a test to see if it makes a difference, but I doubt it.

What happens when the WinME pc is connected to the router by itself? What's slow - the connection or the entire PC?

Also, you said explorer is hanging. Did you mean Internet Explorer (iexplore)?

when it is plugged in all by itself, it still freezes.. and the thing about explorer, is the ctrl alt dlt thing... when i do ctrl alt delete there is a task called explorer, which i guess it just windows.. but it says its not responding..

also, i dont really want to share files between the computers, just have them connected to the internet at the same time

So, you're sure the cable is OK and if you bypass the router and connect the ME computer directly to the modem it works correctly with no freezing, etc. Have you also tried other ports on the router?

If the above is true, here's another test although I don't expect it to make a difference: disable UPnP on the router (on the password page). BTW, what firmware are you using on the router?

I'm not sure what u mean by firmware...and im 100% sure it works without the router, because i just had it hooked up running on the internet.I have tried other ports on the router, but to no avail.

Also.. On my xp, i have two network connections.. one says 1394 connection
1394 net adapter

then there is another that is Local Area Connection and it says enabled, and firewalled?

maybe the firewall might be it???

The firmware version is listed on both the setup and status pages of your router administration area.

Did disabling Universal Plug N Play have any effect?

another thing to add. When the router is hooked up the power, but not the internet, and i hook up the ME, the ME still freezes.

i have no tried Diabling upnp yet

here's another thing.. when i connect the me computer to the router when the me computer is on... is works??
