I am just setting up a win 2000 server and trying to get my XP Pro Desktop to logon to ther server!! Only thing is, that when I put the domain in the box, it says:-----

"A domain controller for the domain could not be contacted"...

"Ensure that the name in typed correctly" (which it is)

If i click on details i get this....

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.

The domain name mydomain might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain mydomain:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.mydomain

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

mydomain
. (the root zone)

I kind of know it works because my laptop logs onto it (but thats another story, in as much that when i click on the server icon it shows me files and folders that i think i shouldn't have access to.)

Does anyone have any clues as to why I get this message?

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Hi Neil,

silly question maybe, but have set the server up as a DC or a member server?

Hi Neil,

I have an article from Technet that describes how XP finds DC and some pointers to resolving the issue. It is rather long so can you send me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.
