hi everyone, i have a defective western digital mybook pro 1TB.
basically, i plugged in the wrong power cord and it stopped working.

so.
i took out both of the 500gb hard drives that the box contained and plugged them into an external box - i then found out that one of the disks isn't spinning/booting up.
The other one seems to be working fine but of course i cant access any data on it as the drives had the files split up between them- well thats what i think anyway
is it possible to recover all the data from the one disk that works , then swap the casing with the defective drive and recover the data from that drive too? then somehow get the images to work together?
i have no idea.
has anyone any suggestions?

oh, by the way, when the hard drives were working, they showed up in my computer as ONE 999gb drive.

thanx in advance

steve

Since you had two 500 GB drives that appeared as a 1 TB volume in your computer, it means they were configured in RAID-0, with no redundancy at all.

Short answer: Your data is gone.

Longer answer: The entire volume is split in chunks of around the 64 kB mark. No way to get that back, the entire filesystem is completely corrupted.

If it's critical, you can contact a data recovery specialist in your area. They have specialised equipment, and as far as I know they often can get quite a lot of data back from situations like the one you are facing.
The downside is that they will charge you handsomely for their services, so you need to consider the financial impact of losing all your data vs paying for the service.

thanx for the reply, i`ll contact a recovery service.

cheers

If you plugged in the wrong power cable, it may just have blown the board on the drive. If you can find another drive (the exact same model), then you can swap over the circuit board and give it a whirl. It will be a lot cheaper than a data recovery service, and it has a decent chance of working.

Failing that, as already mentioned, a professional service is the way to go.

As a data recovery professional, I would honestly suggest going to data recovery provider, though, it isn't always affordable.
I would recommend trying this, since you do not have the equipment required.
1. Read some useful info
2. Yes, you do have a RAID 0 configuration
3. Download this software - (RAID Reconstructor)
4. Install
5. First, take the working hard drive. Using RAID reconstructor - image it.
6. In 99% of the cases I have seen, first drive in the RAID array matches second one perfectly. Therefore, ONLY after you image a working drive, swap good PCB onto a bad drive. See if system recognizes it.
If no - go to Device Manager -> Right Click on Disk Drives -> Scan for hardware Changes
Try this a few times, if still no - go to data recovery provider
If yes, image this drive
Using RAID reconstructor, connect both drives' images, `analyze` them, and scan it. See if it brings your data back.

If you have any issues - reply, if nothing has worked out - send to us or another data recovery provider. If yes - Congratulations!

Good spot, why the hell didn't I think of that.
