Last week i got asked to decommision an old laptop running XP. It was on a domain that no longer existed and the user wanted it for home use.

I removed the machine from the domain
created a new user account
enabled fast user switching

It turns out that the user had saved a number of files to his H drive which was his offline folder. I've searched c:\windows but cannot find the csc directory. Under documents and settings\user i can find nethood which has a link to the old network drives but doesnt seem to contain any offline data.

Question - does removing the machine from the domain or enabling fast user switching (doesnt allow offline files while its active) delete any offline file stores?

Question - Could the offline files be stored anywhere else i have the CSCCMD tool, but dont seem to be able to find the file to extract the data from.

Thanks

H drive? you sure that was not a Network drive?

If you go into disk management how many logical drives are showing?

Nothing should get deleted and you should be able to search for the files, find out what he saved them as and search for the extension.

I've Checked in disk management to make sure it wasnt a usb stick or partion. Confirmed with the user that he was able to access the files without anything plugged in to the laptop.

Try opening a folder and select the tools menu and then folder options. There will be an offline files tab with a button at the bottom of that tab that says "view files" that should take you to where the offline files should be. Good Luck.

Already done that
I know how to use offline files, i need to know if i can recover the data and if so how..

If it was originally listed as a drive then it may have been part of the domain as a profile based drive. You want to try and add the laptop back on to the domain to see if the drive is available and then copy the files to a usb drive or the harddrive.
