Hi All.

We have a problem with offline files on windows XP SP2.
The reminder for going offline keeps poping up.
You click on the reminder and it goes back online.
The email still works in this time with no other evidence that it goes offline. All hardware involved has been changed.

Any ideas.
Thanks

Turn it off:

Open notepad and copy/paste the below, save as offline_off.reg :

******* start copy/paste below this line
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]
"DisableDHCPMediaSense"=dword:00000001

******* end copy/paste above this line

Double-click offline_off.reg to merge the change with your registry. Reboot and test.

/////////////////////

To reverse this change:

Open notepad and copy/paste the below, save as offline_default.reg :

******* start copy/paste below this line
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]
"DisableDHCPMediaSense"=dword:00000000

******* end copy/paste above this line

Double-click to merge with your registry. Reboot and test.

Best,
Bill Castner

I can turn it off through Group policy>admin templates... No need to edit registry.

Someone just told me its an SMB problem on the server!!!
hmm,, looks like another MS patch...

Thanks

Group Policy only stops the reminders, it does not stop XP from going into an offline state. Nor does it allow the user to hit Retry to repair the connection.

In addition, the reminder is prompted from a physical layer failure, not a failure at the protocol layer. SMB has nothing to do with the notifications you are receiving.

If your Win2k servers are at SP4 or you are using Windows 2003, and you are using XP SP2 you do not have "SMB issues", at least as they used to be a factor in Windows Domains.

Hi..

Just to say you was right about sp4 on 2000. We already had SP4. The problems with smb were with sp3.

The patch wouldnt apply. It was meant to sp3.

Thanks for you help..

Thanks,, I'll give it a shot..

I had a read through the article.. This is not the problem we are having.

Its just that the offline bubble appears, when you just click on it it just seems to go online again.
The reg fix you suggested might do it..
