Got this weird bug in Office XP when using Word. If I open Word then File..Open the open dialog box is opened behind the Word document and that document starts to blink. I need to minimize the document in order to access the open dialog box. In addition to that the only item that you can access is the drop down menu. All other buttons are disabled! The problem goes away after you've gone through the above steps once. Anyone know what's up? Or how to correct the problem?

Find the folder on your PC called STARTUP, and specifically the STARTUP folder that is under Office folders. Make sure there's nothing in there.

Nothing in the start folder in Office. Weird thing is that this odd behavior doesn't show up if you start Word using a shortcut on the desktop or within the office folder in program files but when you put the same shortcut on the taskbar and open Word from there, the odd behavior comes back.

Based on your messages above, I've figured a workaround. Right-click on desktop/New/Shortcut/Browse
\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe. Copied this newly created desktop shortcut to the quicklaunch bar. Now running Word, then File/Open works as it should.
Hope this helps!

If you are running Word from the quick launch bar in Windows 98, this is a known issue, and you'll have to contact Microsoft for the HotFix. (Q286857)

Also, Norton AntiVirus can cause this to be a problem as well. Do a search on your system for OfficeAV.dll. Use Start -> Run and put the following, replacing <file path> with the file location of OfficeAV.dll:

regsvr32 /u "<file path>\OfficeAV.dll"

It should say it succeeded.

This component of Norton scans Office files of Macro Viruses as you open them, so be carefull disabling this feature. To enable the OfficeAV.dll after disabling it, you just use the same command, except you remove the /u
