Office XP S-L-O-W when navigating through folders

In all of my office XP Pro components (Word, Office, Excel, Access, etc) when I am accessing files within folders, the navigation among folders is inordinately slow. This does not occur in non-office apps such as Adobe Acrobat or Windows Explorer etc. It often takes many secods - up to 15 - to move from one folder to a lower level folder in the 'open' or 'save' dialog boxes.

Does anyone have any ideas? I would rather not re-install the whole MS Office suite - past experience has taught me that it takes a long time to re-establish all of my preferences etc.

Any help would be most welcome.

I don't know if this applies to your situation or not but I had a similar problem with Windows 2000 whenever I worked from home using a VPN connection.

As it turned out the problem was with the network protocols that were being used. It seems that Office likes to know about all of your connections, network and local, when you go to change folders. So even if you are only going down one level in a folder it still does a check on your network connections to see if they are active.

In my case, the VPN software was using the UDP protocol instead of TCP to work across the connection. This was very slow until I had it changed.

If you are working across a similar type of networking environment this could be your problem.

Thanks DD. While I do not have a VPN or any other extranet connection, I do have 3 local machines networked together. I shall look into the protocol being used - and verify it is TCP.
