The Laptop (HP P4 256k 29G HDD) is connected to a SOHO network via ethernet cables. When the Laptop is plugged into the network, Office XP works as advertised. However, when unplugged from the LAN, Office XP will not save documents or allow features (Bold, Underline, Change font)to run. The system locks up. Reconnect to the Lan and everything is ok. Office XP was installed on the Laptop, not over the network. I have downloaded the latest updates and do not have a virus on the system.
Any suggestions would be of great help. Thanks!

Is the userid that you are loging into set up at least as a poweruser in Users under the control panel?

Yes it is an userid with full privileges.

Thanks for the inputs. I found the problem, it was a shared painter XP picked up from the network, and when the laptop was unplugged, it would crash the applications that used the printer.
Thanks again.
