Have a user that sends spreadsheets to multiple users monthly. This month, users using Office 97 got the error message "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the
incovenience". Then, their Excel session is shut
down. Tried having her save as "Excel 5.0/95 Workbook" instead of saving as "97-2002 & 5.0/95 Workbook", and users can open it, but it loses some functionality. Any ideas on what would be causing this?

Thanks
jdh

The functionality lost is only present from 97 onward?

Cheers,
Dave

Probably the only Test Analyst Manager on Tek-Tips...therefore whatever it was that went wrong, I'm to blame...

animadverto vos in Abyssus!

Take a look at Forum1393!

She left me a voicemail saying that the workbook would open if she saved it under the Excel 5.0/Workbook format, but that "it wasn't doing everything it was supposed to do"... and has since been unreachable. I guess the question is really what would cause such an error so I can fix it without a work-around.

More info:

Error Signature:

AppName: excel.exe AppVer: 8.0.1.9904 ModName: excel.exe
ModVer: 8.0.1.9904 Offset: 001a491d

Thanks for any suggestions!

That depends on what "it wasn't doing everything it was supposed to do" actually means. If it is not doing something because the owner of the file is now using new functionality that wasn't present in Excel 97 then there is not a lot you can do.

Without knowing what is going wrong, no-one is going to be able to help you with a possible reason or solution, so you need to provide details of what was expected to happen but didn't happen. Has it worked before? Has the file provider moved to new version of excel? Has there been a change to the file (no matter how slight) compared with previous versions etc?

Regards
