Running it on Win2k professional.

sometimes when you click on a application icon, (word, excel, outlook, etc) - it's as if windows doesnt' know the MS Office is installed, and the "attempting to install" box comes up. If you log off and log back on, the problem goes away temporarily, but sooner or later it will start on this "attempting to install" routine again, and will not recognize that is indeed installed.

With IE, it works for a while, and then you can't get to any websites - "not found" error keeps coming up. - with this however, it will seem to allow you to get to a home page, but will then go to "not found" error if it is a secure page or if you need to log in.

Again - these problems go away on a re-login or a clean boot, but seem to come back after a length of a few hours/minutes.

I'm suspecting registry damage? Here's what I've tried so far to no avail:

1. repairing the installation of XP from the setup disk
2. completely reinstalling office XP
3. reinstalling IE6 overtop of itself using the latest download from microsoft.com

what the heck else is there other than FDISK and re-installing the entire OS - which I don't really wanna do?

hello

the office problem: when you re/install, have you chosen the option to "run from my computer" and not "run on first use"?

the ie problem: have you scanned your system for any spyware/viruses etc, checked your internet security settings (i.e. using a proxy/firewall would explain not being able to access secure websites). have you checked if there is anythign in your hosts file that might be redirecting web addresses?

host file info here:

good luck with it

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving isn't for you.

Hi frainbreeze

I don't remember seeing an option for that - I'll have to check for it next time I reinstall - which will probably be in the near future.

As far as spyware goes, Incredifind I think somehow might have mangled up the works - I found it and was able to uninstall it with a fix someone on this message board directed me to. I'm running ad-aware6 - which is coming up clean.

as a workaround, I also downloaded netscape7, which doesn't seem to be affected. I also have examined my security settings and firewall settings, I can't find anything wrong - as I mentioned - it all works great on a clean boot.

I think it was that &#%^! Incredifind - system has acted funny after that - although it seems to only affect MS Office software - Why wouldn't uninstall/reinstall fix it?

I'll check out the hosts file when I have a chance.
