office says another user has doc open...

when opening office97 docs a box claims that the document is opened by another user and asks wether i would like to make a copy?
there is only one instance of this doc open
why does this message appear?

I used to have this after a crash, and had to restart before the computer would 'forget' the older link.

I've not had this trouble with Office 200.

Cold Start? Use 'Save As' to begin again under a modified name? Where exactly does it happen?

Right Click my computer
Select manage
Select Shared Folders
Select Open Files

This should show if there is a lock on the file and who or what has it.


If this file is on the file server the above commands need to be done there.
