This is a similar issue to what has been written elsewhere, but I have yet to find a solution.

Computer running Windows XP, SP 3 with Office 2007 loaded. When opening a file by double-clicking from within windows explorer, the file takes 5 minutes to load (approximately 3 minutes to first launch Word and another 2 minutes to load the file).

There is not the same problem when you first open Word from the start menu and navigate to the file from file->open.

The problem exists whether it is a local file or remote.

During the five minute "waiting period," you can actually launch Word from the start menu and load either the file I'm trying to open or a different file. A second instance will open after the five minute wait.

Other files, (non-office), load fine from explorer. Specifically, an acrobat file was tried.

I have removed and rebuilt the .doc registry key. I have also performed a diagnose and repair on office. No problems were found and neither solution helped.

This is an intermittent problem, typically worse after booting, but comes and goes (and comes back) without reboot.

Any help would be appreciated.

How old is the system - does it suffer from registry bloat?

Is Office 2007 installed on top of Office 2003? Could it be looking for 2003, failing miserably and then trying 2007?

Try this: Taken from another "EXPERT" site.

Check if there are any invalid drive mappings in the system, and if so disable them. Also check for UNC references in the registry. More details at this link
Ignore the article title, and see section about "RegScanner

It is a two year old system (laptop). 2007 was the original office install (not on top of 2003). I have not been able to find any invalid drive mappings and have also set the "Do not track shell shortcuts when roaming" in group policy edit.
