Whenever Win 98 SE locks up and I have to cold boot, my shortcut bar in Office 97 displays the same icon for all shortcuts. I have sp1 installed. This happens a lot. It comes back after a few days and after many reboots. I've looked at Microsoft's support site to no avail. Does anybody experience this problem?

Uninstall the Office Toolbar.

:)

seriously though, have you reapplied SP1 and SP2b?

Cbelfigl,

(only if the shortcut bar is at the top of your screen, pull it into the middle of your screen for now)

Right-click on any non-used area of the toolbar and you should get a menu that includes "Refresh Icons" as one of the options. Do it!

(Put your toolbar back, if necessary.)

I don't think the SPs have anything to do with it either, Z. Never heard of that being an issue with the icons.

Cb: You may also want to consider some hard drive maintenance because this can occur due to lack of resources. Go here: Read Article III and take the steps under Periodic Hard Drive Maintenance.

IMHO :)
Resources are a consideration here, and that D--n toolbar is a resource HOG. Get rid of it. IMHO.

Johnny: It's been my opinion that the office shortcut bar works better than all those shortcuts on your desktop. Did you know that you can use it for ANY app? Not just Office or MS apps, but any exe. Just create a shortcut on you desktop, then drag it onto the Office toolbar.

IMHO.

Why not just use the space provided by win 98 at the bottom of you screen in the quick launch section? The door to life is never locked, but few have the knowledge to open it.
