Office 2003 in a Windows 7 world 1

The ribbon is a lot less offensive in Excel than Word, I feel. The reason is that spreadsheet cells are wide, but not very tall, so it's usually the number of columns I can squeeze on the screen that bothers me, not the number of rows.

Yeah, I can see that being true. And for me, as well, I think I've gone to a bigger screen in almost every environment that I've used Office.
