I've got the same problem on two systems - one being my laptop and one being a test system we use.
I only noticed it recently after installing Office 2007 - the ribbon is a grey colour, the buttons are all really bad quality and it almost looks like Office 2000.
The other system is running office 2003 and after checking this, the menu looks the same as mine.
Both the systems have recently had XPSP3 installed but I installed office 2007 after the SP3 installation.
Short of removing XPSP3, has anyone come accross this before and know what to do to resolve?
I've tried repairing Office 2007 installation. May try removing and reinstalling but it takes an age!

I have dual display too, the other PC affected has a triple display. But then my colleagues laptops are running dual and they didn't have the same issue!

I'm having the same issue & it began the day I had a second monitor installed (unfortunately by an IT guys so I can't say for certain what settings were messed with). So I'm inclined to associated with the dual monitors, even if its indirectly.

I'm using Office 2003 on XP. I've tried the suggestion above (My Computer -> System Properties -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Visual Effects & making sure the High Contrast setting is off). I didn't see any SMS stuff to delete...

& of course before I even got to this forum I was scouring the internet for MS Office help b/c at first, I thought it had to do with some display customizations in there)

If it occurred specifically after the dual-monitor setup, it most definitely sounds like something to do with the display driver. Whether it's an SMS driver or not, it definitely sounds like a display driver.

I believe this may resolve your issues:

START>Right Click My Computer (or what ever your computer is named)>Properties>Choose the Advanced Tab of System Properties>Click on Performance Settings>Click on the Radio button for Adjust for Best Appearance.

Close any office application and reopen.

That should give you back your Office 2003 / 2007 GUI
