Hi,

Experiencing this problem at work- any help with this would be much appreciated!!

You open up an office document - eg Excel over the network, when someone else tries to open this file it tells you that someone has this file open right? Well it lists who the user is or pc name that has the file open- where do you change this name?

I think this is set whilst you are installing Office/Win98 however I have tried searching in the registry for the values but cannot find where to change this!

This would be extremely useful to me as I can quickly determine who has the file open so I can get them out of it

Any help would be appreciated! thanks

Usually, it shows the computer name. Change the name of the computer.

from the network properties, identification tab, change the name of the computer as desired.

hope this helps. peace! [peace]

oh no sorry folks its not as simple as that

Thats one of the first things I tried!

cheers!

finally found how to do it!!!!

Heres how if anyone wants to know :)

Open up Regedit

Follow this route:
My Computer—HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ SOFTWARE \ MICROSOFT \ OFFICE \ 9.0\ COMMON\USERINFO

Rename the user info folder to UserInfoold

Close Regedit and then open up Excel document and type in your name and initials when prompted.

\\\ note: please only use regedit if your are experienced as this can cause many problems if values/keys are deleted/modified/renamed by mistake\\\
