I was just curious as to whether or not I'm going to run into problems regarding purchasing an OEM version of XP Home edition for my older system. I have a 766Mhz, 128MB RAM system. I read that you can only purchase OEM versions for new systems, but I'm wanting to shell out less than $200 for a new OS because I currently have Windows ME and want something a little more stable. My question is whether or not it is "legal" to purchase an OEM version for an older PC and whether or not I will be able to put that version on 2 computers? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks alot ahead of time!

The way licences work is that you NEVER actually own any software, you just have a licence to use that software.

Most software is licenced to run on ONE computer and licences are required for each machine, however SITE licences are availble for corporate users etc. OEM's usually purchase an OEM Pack which has the software and then licences with it which can be put with each machine supplied to end users.

Most of the information regarding the software licence can be seen in the agreement that is displayed during installation. ( But who ever reads that! :) )

If the software is for your own use at home etc then you will probably never need a 2nd licence (although technically you should buy one), but for 1 or 2 machines it is normally cheaper just to buy a 2nd copy of the software than just a licence.

Anymore information should be available from the Microsoft website or an intilectual copyright lawyer. !

(Any mispelled words are the sign of a fatigued brain !)

The OEM version will work fine if you do a clean installation. It can not be used to upgrade and it is tied to that computer forever. MS will not give tech support because your support would normally come from the OEM builder.

you will need more ram than 128 if you want your system to run! 128 is minimum requirements for xp

Johnodq: Thanks alot for the information posted. I appreciate it. Goood info!

smah: Thanks for the confirmation about a clean install-I've heard the same from others and you just solidified things for me.

rew: Also, thanks for the info-Just got an upgrade to RAM yesterday!
